Call To Worship
We confess the supremacy of God in Christ through both responsive reading and song.

Our Spoken Call to Worship
(adapted from Isaiah 42)

Oh Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
You are the Lord; that is Your name;
We will not give Your glory to another
Nor Your praise to anything lesser.

We come to sing to the Lord a new song
And shout Your praise to the ends of the earth.
Let all the inhabitants of Ames sing Your praise;
Let us shout from our homes and town!
Let us give glory to You, Oh Lord, and declare Your praise from the heartlands!

Our Sung Call to Worship
Behold Our God

Confession
We confess our need for mercy through both responsive reading and song.

Our Spoken Confession
(adapted from the writings of Frank Hall)

Oh Lord, our hearts are deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.
We look within, hoping to find something good, something pure, something precious, something clean.
But what do we see?

Nothing but sin.

There is nothing within us to give us hope, rest, or peace.
There is nothing that will bring us joy.

All that we see within is foul, ugly, and grim.
Remind us now of our desperate condition when left to ourselves and without Christ.
Let this sight sicken us and change the direction or our gaze.

Our Sung Confession
Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy

Assurance and Peace
We profess our assurance of salvation and peace in Christ through both responsive reading and song.

Remember the Gospel
(adapted from the writings of Frank Hall)

Let us look up!

Let us fix our eyes upon Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith!
Our hope is not within, but without and seated at the right hand of the throne of God!

Let us lift up the heads that are bowed down with guilt and shame.

Behold Christ our Savior!
Behold our glorious Redeemer!
Bid sorrow goodbye and fear depart!
Rejoice for we are complete in Him!

Believers, we are perfect in Christ!
Perfect is not something that we will be, or strive to be-but something that we are right now by virtue of our eternal union with God’s Son!

So, what do we lack?

We lack nothing!
All that He is–we are in Him!
All that He has–we have in Him!
All that He has done–we have done in Him!
We are completely righteous in Him!
We are completely holy in Him!
We are completely forgiven in Him!
We are completely accepted in Him!
We are completely, everlastingly, perfectly sinless in Him!

Let us fix our eyes upon Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith!

Thanksgiving and Petition

We Give Thanks in Prayer and Offer Petitions to God
We express our gratitude to God our Father for Christ’s work on the cross for us and bring our requests before him. In bringing our requests, we confess that we believe God truly is a good father, who cares about our needs and gives us what he knows is best.

We Give Thanks by Giving
We give financial offerings to support the work of the church because of our gratitude to God. By giving we confess we are trusting in God’s provision for us as well. On the first Sunday of each month, we have two offerings—one for the general fund and a second one for the benevolence ministry of our church.

Scripture Reading (video)

Scripture Reading
Mark 1:1-15 (ESV)
1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,

“Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way,
3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight,’”

4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

Blessing
Hebrews 12:1

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith.
